Game UI/UX Designers can be called different names in the games industry depending on the studio and the position:

  1. UI/UX Artist
  2. UI/UX Designer
  3. User Interface Artist
  4. (Technical/Tech) UI Designer: With the word “Technical” added, it means you must have some level of understanding and experience using a game engine (Unity, Unreal Engine, Godot.. etc.) for your designs (not necessarily programming them).

All the roles mentioned above will require you to have some varying level of experience working in the games industry. It’s hard to get a UI/UX design role in the games industry without having a portfolio that shows any previous experience as a UI/UX designer on a game project. To solve this, one approach to take would be to work on a game concept UI/UX prototype OR Work with a small (indie) team as a UI/UX designer. These would enable you get the portfolio/ experience in games.
